What Causes Pain behind Knee
There are many things that can cause pain behind knee areas. This can include but is not limited to:
- Injury
- Overuse
- Water on the knee
- Arthritis
Pain behind Knee Cap
When experiencing pain behind knee cap areas, this can be attributed to a few things including water on the knee, swelling of the tendons or muscles as well as irritation of the nerves. If there is any swelling at all causing pain behind knee cap areas, this should be seen by a doctor. Swelling is your body’s natural way of telling you that something is wrong and it has to be taken care of before it gets worse. Swelling keeps the area from sustaining more injury, and the area fills with fluid to keep any other harm from coming to the area. If there is pain behind knees that has no swelling, this can be from overuse or even irritation of the nerves.
Pain behind Knee Area
Where there is pain behind knee areas, this can be due to leg pain; behind knee areas there are tendons and ligaments that connect to the bony tissues surrounding the knee cap and joints. When there is knee pain, behind knee areas can be damaged or swollen. What causes pain behind the knee can be found by observing the area to find bruising, as this could be an indication of injury. If you have smacked your knee into a table leg, kneeling on the knee too long at work or squatted for too long until you heard a pop, pain behind knee areas should be looked at by a professional.
Knee Pain, Behind the Knee Joints
When you feel knee pain behind knee bones or pain behind knee cap, it is best to not bend the knee for a while. Using the knee to hold weight or to even stretch can do damage if the tendons and ligaments behind the knee cap are torn, loose or damaged in any way. This can result in water on the knee which is actually a large amount of fluids that are caused by injury and damage to the area. Pain behind knee area in the rear of the leg is normally due to muscle cramps or knots, and can be treated with muscle rubs for initial pain relief. When pain behind knees is felt on a regular basis with time in between the pain, this is probably due to overuse or being overweight. Standing for long periods of time with improper support in the shoes can cause leg pain, behind knee pains and stress on the muscles.
To deal with the pains felt from standing for long periods of time or from running on irregular ground levels, it is best to change the type of shoe you are wearing. Good shoes for standing will have more than normal amounts of cushion and support in the instep area as well as at the ball of the foot and the heel. For running purposes, a shoe with extra support at the ball of the foot and a heel cup will help relieve pain.
