These are both reasons for there to be swelling behind the knee area. Pain behind the knee from swelling can be attributed to the following causes:

  • Water on the knee
  • Bursitis

Knee Injuries

Knee injuries are one of the number one causes for pain behind the knee. Not only do we hit our knees against objects on a regular basis at work, but when sitting at a desk or table we also come into contact with objects. Our knees are one of the most overlooked areas of the body unless there is pain. Where there is pain behind the knees, it is important to see a physician. You may be referred to an orthopedic physician in order to find out the cause of the pain. From bone disorders to ligament and tendon problems, knee injuries are seen from athletes, housewives and children alike.

Pain behind the Knee

When there is pain behind the knee, do not ignore the issue thinking it will get better. It may, or it may be caused by an ongoing illness or trauma that you do not even know you have. Bones are hard tissues, but the cartilage and tendons surrounding the knee are very porous and easily strained or hurt. Your weight can have a lot to do with pain behind the knee, as the knees are responsible for helping to carry around the additional weight. When overweight, the stress on the knees is almost doubled, and this can cause inflammation of the surrounding tissues. Inflammation that goes on for too long can cause swelling of these tissues and if the knee injuries are allowed to go untreated, can even cause disabilities.

At Home Treatment for Pain behind the Knee

When dealing with the pain, it is important to know the cause of pain behind the knee. The cause of pain behind the knee should be diagnosed by a doctor and not self diagnosed. There are times when a doctor will not give you pain medication or you are unable to take the medicine due to side effects or work. Using a heating pad can be recommended as long as the cause of pain behind the knee is due to ligaments, tendons or muscles. If the cause of pain is due to bone disorders or arthritis, over the counter medications can be purchased and used according to your own likes or dislikes. It is not recommended that you take NSAIDs while taking any prescription medication for pain, as this can cause an overdose since so many OTC medicines contain NSAIDs.
